“We crave for new sensations but soon become indifferent to them. The wonders of yesterday are today common occurrences.”- Nikola Tesla, My Inventions Was it interest or curiosity? This week, I drove a Tesla for the first time. I had wanted to drive one for a long time, and it certainly felt different from other cars. The interior was very minimal, the central screen was huge, and the technology was impressive. I enjoyed the experience, but once I had finally driven it, some of its appeal faded. I realised that my interest was partly driven by curiosity. I wanted to know what driving a Tesla felt like, without necessarily wanting to own one. Perhaps that is what happens with many things we desire. Part of their appeal comes from not having experienced them yet. Once our curiosity is satisfied, we discover whether the interest was genuine or whether we simply wanted something new. The real test will come the next time I rent a car. Would I pay extra to drive a Tesla again, or has the appeal already worn off? Tags |
