Hi fellow editheadz! First of all I would like to start off with some sad news. Tape edit master from the 80s and early 90s Greg "Ski" Royal sadly passed away last month. Way too young at the age of 62. Greg not only was an incredible master of the tape edit, he also was involved in some major R&B and hiphop productions later in his career, teaming up with the likes of Dr. Dre and RBX. I know Greg from his special edits on numerous R&B productions by...to name a few...Bobby Brown, Karen White, Jody Watley, Pebbles and Paula Abdul. He made a ton of crazy edits. I recommend to deep dive into his repertoire on YouTube. There's loads of his stuff available.
Check out these incredibly sick edits by Greg on this kinda cheesy song by New Edition.
New Edition - You're Not My Kind of Girl | Special Edits by Greg Ski Royal Well, over to some good news. Editheadz.com is finally online and most probably you all received a personal login. If you haven't already, please let me know. I hope you all share some quality edits you made yourself and if you happen to have good quality rips of old pioneer stuff, then that will be more than welcome as well.
What's new? I would like to put the spotlight on one of the editheadz veterans from the east coast of the US: the incomparable Jeff Cruz. Jeff and I go way back in the early days of the editheadz yahoo groups, because we used a similar piece of software to make cuts called Acid Pro by Sonic Foundry and later by Sony. We teamed up a couple of times under the moniker of The Stereo Slicers. Because we had a kinda similar approach to editing we exchanged our edits on a song to mash it into some dope mixes. I recall: Hungry For Your Love, Sidewalk Talk, I Feel For You and the Apache remix...there are some more. I have to look that up. OK, Jeff Cruz. This month he delivered an incredible chopped up version of Fonda Rae - Touch Me. Nice fact to mention is that he used the iVox app to make (some of) the cuts. Also check out his signature effect that I used to call the helicopter delay.
Need some track inspiration or need some challenge? I know all of us have busy lives and often time is much too scarce to actually pick up the razorblade to shave, let alone make edits. I hope I inspire you to pick it up anyway and if you don't know which song to chop....here's a nice track for you, that you can rip apart! Nuance feat. Vikki Love - Stop Playing On Me ( Click the three dots in the player to download the wav file) I'm really curious with what you can up with.
Talk about scarcity of time, somehow in my excitement I kinda underestimated the time pressure of writing a newsletter every month. So although I keep trying to have a newsletter in your mailbox on a monthly basis, you'll have to forgive me when I miss one.
I hope you'll contact me if you have new stuff or information that's worth sharing. I'll do my best to keep the newsletter worth reading.
Til next time! Chops,
