Week 42. Better Next Time

Oct 18, 2026

“But I keep on making what I can’t do yet in order to learn to be able to do it.”

- Vincent van Gogh

Learning for Next Time

This week, Lindsay was priming furniture, and we were figuring out how to get a smooth surface. It is one of those things that sounds straightforward until you try it.

That is the dilemma with DIY. You want a good result on your first attempt, but you are still learning how to achieve it. You search online, ask ChatGPT and get started. Along the way, you discover details you did not even know to ask about.

By the time you finish, you have a clearer idea of what you should have done differently. That knowledge would have been useful at the beginning.

Of course, the learning still has value. But when you are working on something for your home, you also have to live with the result. Learning a new skill and getting the finish you wanted do not always happen together.

Next time, I would know what to do differently. I just wonder whether there will be a next time.
