Gator boots with the pimped out Gucci suits

Sep 9, 2026

Hi, I haven't been feeling particularly great for the last couple of weeks so...sorry about going a bit silent. Inevitably, when I feel down, I reach for music that can inevitably transport me to a different mood altogether. A recent mood booster for me has been the delight of marching band covers, so my first exposure to this song was actually from Mardi Gras this year and it has been on heavy rotation because the feeling of the song feels like it fits the times. How does one continue to Still be Fly even when the world feels like it's stacked against you?

Big Tymers - Still Fly

The mood

I'm spending the $20 that gets passed around on beers to share with my friends

The context

Imagine the immense pressure of having to follow up Juvenile's early career. Truly, when you listen to the year of hip-hop for 2002, there's so many absolute bangers across the board, Grindin' was this same year???? Insane.

It turns out, Still Fly was Mannie Fresh and Birdman aka "Baby" just throwin' down a takedown of people who are fakin' it til they make it. I'm throwing this on the same cassette I have Big Dawgs, Mo Bamba, Swag Surfin' and frankly, every HBCU band cover of Sticky on.

I hope that it is a foregone conclusion that if one bucks, they must also knuck.
