I'm chuckling at the anti-MacBook Neo reactions! The Neo has hit a nerve with People Who Need A Proper MacBook Not A Silly Toy. Setting aside the simple fact that 1) most ragers haven't tried it yet (the Neo will be available from early April), and 2) not everyone needs a fully decked out M5 Max MacBook monster to work on/compensate with, the reactions are unusually vitriolic. The Neo does indeed run on an iPhone chip and is mostly lower spec than previous MacBooks, and comes in really pretty colours! I'm not sure which fact triggers the most rage. Want to know my theory? The angry laptop people might feel this is the second part of a one-two punch. First people started using iPads to work on ("WTF?!)", but at least The Laptop was safe! But now there's a laptop powered by a phonechip ("!!") that people will likely do work on! ("Is nothing SACRED?!") Want to know why I love the Neo? It'll be a perfect complement to my iPad-only way of working. Sometimes a laptop running macOS provides a smoother work flow/a nice change from working on the iPad. As simple as that. At home-base the Neo can also be the center of my video-meet/home-studio set up. At a very reasonable €600 it can be "just" a supporting piece of kit. There are lots of positive reactions to the Neo announcement too. Including from those who acknowledge that they, like most people, need less computing power than they think they do. And those who refuse to be stuck in a large file, document centric way of working while the world has moved toward other formats and ways-of-working (recommended read: the .md pitchdeck story). But that's a topic for another day! Love the Neo or hate the Neo. Mine will be the yellow Citrus one. Are we now well and truly running out of good band names? ☺️ 🤗 ▷ From Deezer's Indie playlist this morning: Cut worm. Porridge radio. Inhaler. Sorry.
The good read ⫘ The human skill that evades AI – Why can't language models write well? ”In a certain, strange way, generative AI peaked with OpenAI’s GPT-2 seven years ago. [...] It was creative. You could be like, ‘Continue this story: The man decided to take a shower,’ and GPT-2 would be like, ‘And in the shower, he was eating his lemon and thinking about his wife,’ [...] The models won’t do that anymore."
