Rumicat vs beehiiv

Built to make the number go up.

Rumicat is a beehiiv alternative for people who don't want a growth stack.

beehiiv is very good software built on one premise: a newsletter is a business, and a business should get bigger. Referral programs, an ad network, boosts, split tests, SEO pages. Every screen asks the same question, which is how do we get more.

Rumicat doesn't ask that question anywhere. There's no referral program, no ad network, no boosts and no growth tab, because we couldn't think of a version of those that wouldn't change what you write.

What beehiiv is for

beehiiv is for people who intend to earn from attention at scale, and it's good at that. Sponsorships, a referral loop, a dashboard that tells you which lever moved the number.

Their free tier is also far bigger than ours and they take nothing from paid subscriptions, which is more than most can say.

What Rumicat is for

Rumicat is for writing that wouldn't survive being optimized.

You can see how many people opened it. You can turn even that off. There's no funnel underneath, nothing to A/B test, no growth score to feel bad about in a slow month.

A hundred readers who chose to be there isn't a failed version of ten thousand. It's a hundred readers.

Moving from beehiiv to Rumicat

beehiiv lets you export your audience as a CSV, and we import one. Posts don't come across on their own, so an archive you care about has to be moved by hand or left where it is.

  1. 1Export your subscribers from beehiiv as a CSV
  2. 2Import that CSV into Rumicat
  3. 3Re-publish any past issues you want in your new archive

Is Rumicat a good beehiiv alternative?

Only if the growth machinery was the part you disliked. If sponsorship revenue and subscriber acquisition are the point, we're the wrong tool and it isn't close.

Their free tier holds 2,500 people against our 300. If size is what decides it, that's a real reason to pick them and we won't pretend otherwise.

Does Rumicat have a referral program or an ad network?

No, and we're not planning either of them.

Both of them work by turning your readers into a distribution channel. That's a reasonable thing to build, it just isn't the thing we're building.

When to pick beehiiv

If you want a newsletter business, pick beehiiv. They're better at it than we'll ever be, and the free tier carries you a long way before you pay anything.

If you already have more than 300 readers and no budget, pick beehiiv. We'd rather you had a home than a cramped one.
