Rumicat vs Buttondown

A tool, where we made a page.

Rumicat is a Buttondown alternative for people who'd rather be handed something finished than something extensible.

Buttondown is the competitor we like most. Small, opinionated, run by someone who obviously cares, allergic to the same bloat we are. If you leave us for Buttondown we won't be offended.

The difference shows up on day one. Buttondown gives you a clean base and lets you switch on analytics, tagging, automations and a custom domain as you need them. Rumicat gives you a page that's already done, with nothing to add.

What Buttondown is for

Buttondown suits writers who are also builders. Markdown and plain text first, deep automations, and a pricing model where you pay for the pieces you actually turn on.

It's the better choice if you want to wire your newsletter into something else, or if you have opinions about how the email itself gets composed.

What Rumicat is for

Rumicat suits writers who don't want to configure anything.

You pick a color, maybe add a background, write what you have to say and hit send. There's no add-on shelf, because a shelf implies that what you were handed wasn't finished.

One price covers everything we make, which is an easy promise when you make as little as we do.

Moving from Buttondown to Rumicat

Buttondown is good about data and everything is exportable, which is the mark of a company that expects you might leave and is fine about it.

  1. 1Export your subscribers from Buttondown
  2. 2Import the CSV into Rumicat
  3. 3Re-publish any past issues you want in your new archive

Is Rumicat a good Buttondown alternative?

If what you want is fewer decisions and one price, yes. If you want automations or Markdown-first writing, Buttondown wins and we'd rather you knew that now.

The sharpest practical difference is the shape of the bill. Buttondown starts free at 100 subscribers and grows as you switch add-ons on at $9, $29 and $79 a month. Rumicat is free to 300 and $6.99 after that, with everything included.

Does Rumicat have an API?

Yes. There's a small REST API for newsletters and subscribers: list and create newsletters, preview one, send it, and manage your subscriber list.

It's narrower than Buttondown's, which reaches more of the product and is better documented. If the API is central to what you're doing, go there.

Which one is simpler, Rumicat or Buttondown?

They're simple in different directions. Buttondown is simple like a good text editor, a small core you extend on purpose. Rumicat is simple like a postcard, where there's nothing to extend.

If you enjoy setting a tool up, you'll prefer Buttondown. If setting a tool up is the reason you still haven't started, you'll prefer ours.

When to pick Buttondown

If you want automations, tagging, multiple newsletters, or your archive on your own domain, pick Buttondown. We don't offer any of those.

If you write in Markdown and care how the email is put together, pick Buttondown. It's a lovely product and we'd sooner point you there than sell you a worse fit.
